Why Israel is not Ireland

August 27th, 2007  ·  2 Comments

A Northern Ireland peace activist visiting Jerusalem last week made the ridiculous assertion that if the Catholic-Protestant conflict in her part of the world can be resolved through dialog, so can the Israeli-Arab conflict.

This is comparing apples to oranges. The conflict in Ireland was a purely nationalistic one, despite the fact that the sides were divided down Christian denominational lines. The Catholic-dominated IRA was not bombing Protestant communities because they were Protestant, but rather because they sided with Britain’s continued occupation of Northern Ireland.

The Irish speaker, however, had fully bought into the lie that Arab violence against the Jewish state is also purely nationalistic. In reality, this is a religious conflict, a clash of civilizations, if you will. The crux of the conflict - as Hamas and the more straightforward Arab groups will admit - is that Islam cannot accept the loss of land it once controlled to the Jews.

Even if these peaceniks succeed in getting one group of Arabs to sign a peace deal with Israel, the conflict will continue to rage because to truly end it would be un-Islamic. The Koran teaches that in fact all non-Muslim nations must ultimately be warred against until Allah rules the world.
