Kofi Annan and his buddies are trying really hard to keep news of Israel’s accidental killing of four UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon on the front pages. But the truth is, the UN itself is to blame for the deaths of those four international troops.
Israeli bombs may have (unintentionally) taken their lives, but if UNIFIL (the UN Interim Force In Lebanon) had done the job it was given 28 years ago, Israel wouldn’t have to be dropping bombs at all today.
UNIFIL was given a mandate in 1978 to keep hostile forces away from northern Israel and help the Lebanese government extend its authority over southern Lebanon. It failed miserably (or didn’t even try), leaving Israel with no choice but to invade in 1982 and push Yasser Arafat’s PLO out of range of the Jewish state.
In May 2000, Israel gave UNIFIL another chance by vacating southern Lebanon. But again, the “peacekeeping” force refused to do anything about Hizb’allah’s control of southern Lebanon and aggression against Israel.
In fact, not only did UN troops sit by and watch as Hizb’allah abducted three IDF soldiers in October 2000, it was later discovered that the terrorists actually used UNIFIL vehicles to enable them to get close enough to the Israelis undetected.
But Israel, in its deep desire to see the international community live up to its word, stayed out of Lebanon and continued to entrust the safety of its northern residents to an impotent foreign force.
But the massive assault earlier this month was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back. Why did UNIFIL not prevent Hizb’allah from launching that provocation? It’s almost as if the world wants Israel to get sucked into these orgies of violence just so it has another chance to condemn the Jewish state.
UNIFIL could have avoided yesterday’s casualties by having done its job in the first place. And after deciding not to do its job, UNIFIL should have promptly removed its troops from the area when it became clear Israel would have to the job for it.
Helping to facilitate the creation of a war zone, then placing your own people right in the middle of it, and then blaming the nation suffering aggression out of that war zone for accidentally killing your people is utter foolishness.

THE WORLD WOULD IMMEDIATELY HAVE KNOWN OF THE
UNIFIL STORY IF THE GOVERNMENT OF ISRAEL HAD MANY
YEARS AGO HIRED THE BEST PUBLIC RELATIONS FIRM.
AND EVEN TODAY THEY REFUSE TO HIRE SUCH A FIRM.
I HAVE BEEN TELLING THE P.M. TO GET A VERY EXPERIENCED COMPANY FROM MADISON AVE IN N.Y.C.
IT IS NOT TOO LATE SOMEONE SHOULD TELL THE INCOMPETENT OLMERT TO HIRE THE BEST PUBLIC RELATIONS FIRM AVAILABLE. NOW, AT ONCE!

Well said! The international community of armchair experts needs to hear this perspective.

What’s the difference between Unifil and Landfill?
Landfill has a useful purpose.

This is very similar to an incident of ‘friendly fire,’ whereby a soldier is killed - accidentally - by his own forces. Kofi Annan should have realized that!

Your comments could not have been stated better. The UN has not done their job, only collected their salaries and enjoyed their elite and prestigious benefits at the cost of lives that are now being lost by both countries involved. Hezballah militants deaths….that’s a whole other matter. May God Himself punish them!

I couldn’t agree with all of you more!

The United states gives more aid to the evil UN than all countries put together, and the people here voted to get them out of the US and the US out of the toothless UN. It is overtime to do so. Our constitution is to keep the goverment in control, not the peple, like our Independance. time to stand with our only firends..Israel..and boot out the dang Muslims. Doesn’t matter what tribe, just all of them in Israel, and in the US. If not we will see world war, it will be ugly. the world is in fear..but we that serve the G-d of Abraham will be with our King, and He is coming soon.

I believe there’s even more than meets the eye…maybe the UN outposts harboring terrorists or in some way assisted the terriorists. Could be wrong, however when I was told to get out of town due to hurricaine Camille I did. I do feel or the people and the families caught in the cross fire. signed Granny Baba

Granny wonders if this effort was started at this time because of the time of year astrologically speaking.

the united nations should be disbanded. Without this hedious organization of rogue nations there would be no war in the middle east. Mr Annan is afraid to say the truth.

The UN should be wiped off the map! They serve no purpose.

When the elections ran, George W. was the most conservative man running. He is a brother in the LORD. If there had been a better choice, he would have gotten my vote. I am not specifically impressed with the way he has done things, especially on this road map nonsense, but we as GOD daily to deal with him in such a way that we in the US can help defeat the enemy. If he were not to keep patting these Muslims on the back, it would go better for him and us as well.

First my salute to the IDF for their bravery and quoting from an article I read today, the Jews in Israel are the eternal warriors. God is with you all the way so keep on pressing to victory. As for K.Annan it seems he gets more stupid each time. Forgive my ignorance as to how they choose a UN secretary, if a Jew be chosen for the post sure there is a chance that this world be better off even fo a while.

Rwgarding the UN article.
You are absolutly right.
The UN to my way of thinking? should be done away with. All they do is drag their feet and try to look as if they are busy.
What they should do is support Israel. That land belongs to them.
20 Salah Uddin // Jul 29, 2006 at 1:19 pm
I agree with everyone on this site, let’s wipe the UN out and start a league of nations based in Europe, so that the US stop meddling.
We will see then how Israel fares amongst its neighbours.!!!

These pictures are horrible to see, Salah Uddin.
But is it not so that these pictures are showing what Hamas, PLO and Hezbollah,(and all the rest) want to do with Israel?
Anyone knows that the UN is an organization with no power.
Lots of words and wind making speeches. If they would fire one bullet then there would be ten forms to be filled in, why the bullet was shot.

Geert,
Your corrupt mind doesn’t allow you to think.
And you want to be god’s chosen people.
God help us!!!!
That is why we don’t want you to run this world as you have in the past!
