War is not the answer?

July 9th, 2006  ·  15 Comments

Driving around in Southern California today I noticed a bumper sticker that read “War is not the answer.” I assume it was a liberal jab at President George W. Bush’s going to war against those who attacked this nation a short five years ago.

It got me thinking about the kind of ignorant “happy-in-the-bubble” mindset that would lead to the proud display of such a statement.

War is not the answer to what exactly?

Is war not the answer to a massive attack that took the lives of some 3,000 of your countrymen? Because I guarantee, endless talking and “diplomacy” would only leave the door open for more such assaults.

Clinton eschewed the path of war after Al Qaeda and its allies bombing a number of US embassies and other American targets during his presidency. That decision left bin Laden and his cronies virtually unbothered to plot their next massacre of infidels.

Clearly, Clinton’s path “was not the answer.”

So if Clinton-esque diplomacy won’t work, and Bush’s blazzing guns are unacceptable, pray tell, how is America to deal with the Islamic threat against it and the rest of the West that has been gaining in intensity for decades now?

I hear a lot of complaining by Bush’s detractors, but very few suggested alternatives.

I guess the problem is that so many Americans refuse to accept this one fundamental truth: You would still be at war even if Bush had not liberated Afghanistan and Iraq.

The only choice to make here is whether you want to sit back absorbing attacks, or take the fight to your enemies.

“I assume it was a liberal jab at President George W. Bush’s going to war against those who attacked this nation a short five years ago.”

The only problem with your argument here is this statement. Iraq never attacked the United States, nor did they sponsor the people that did. Ask the FBI. Ask the CIA. Hell, ask President Bush. He admitted this in a press conference, but I guess you missed that one.

If you don’t remember, no one complained about the war in Afghanistan, because our enemies were IN Afghanistan. War is a neccessary evil, in cases like this, but the Iraq war was unjustified, and now Bush’s approval rating is in the low 30s and a lot of his own party are turning their back on him as a result of the mistakes he’s made.

It is very naive to believe regimes like those in Iraq, Iran and Syria were in no way involved in 9/11 by providing logistical and/or financial support to the terrorists.

I mean, do you really believe Afghanistan was able to provide the kind of backing needed to carry out that assault?

This is part of the problem: Too many Americans subscribe to the notion that their nation is at war with one small rag-tag group of terrorists.

In reality, our enemy is militant Islam, which, at least in the Middle East, is better known as mainstream Islam.

If you think our enemies were only in Afghanistan, then you missed the wild street celebrations that broke out in EVERY nation of the Middle East as scenes of the World Trade Center coming down were replayed again and again.

Just 5-10 miles from my home I remember the “moderate” Palestinian Arabs joyously passing out candies and singing praises to Allah on the main thoroughfares of eastern Jerusalem.

I accept that was is the answer, BUT it is how one goes about it. When Israel was heading toward Canaan, HE did not tell them to be nice to the enemy. They were to slaughter them without mercy. George W. has some good intentions, but he is being too nice about it.

Our problem in the US is that that we are not that pleasing to GOD to start with. If we were a spiritually pleasing nation to GOD, I suggest that these dirty little Arab rebels would be celebrating their Eternity in the lake of fire already. Personally, I am asking GOD to turn this Nation back to HIS desires. It will not happen in a day, but it could happen before the Church is removed. We are so politically correct, now, that the criminal Mexicans are all but taking our society over as well.

I have suggest to a number of commentators that we need to have a nation wide repentance. If we did that, these Arabs might wonder why they are going under so fast.

    I have two typos.
I meant to say that war IS the answer.

My thought on the last paragraph should read- I have suggested.

Beware of making assumptions about the motives of others. Calling people ignorant, “happy-in-the-bubble” mindset, are very arrogant, elitist words. What does your bumper sticker say? War is the answer?

War never solved anything! Except ending Facism, Nazism, Communism…
Germany never attacked us either in WWII.

    blah,

Actually, yes, they were protesting the war in Afghanistan. Our precious ‘voices of dissent’ began shortly after the two towers fell when it was clear what answer GW would be giving.

I like the thinking of Edward of Oregon.
War is not the solution, but it is necessary with two other ingredients:
    1. National prayer and repentance, which will restore
    2. a clear, shared understanding of who our enemy is.

In order for our goals in the Global War on Terror to be achieved, we need more than 'boots on the ground'. First, we need a clear national vision shared by the American people, which can also inspire and encourage our allies in the world. This vision needs to include a clear understanding of what we are fighting. We are not warring against flesh and blood, but against powers and principalities(Eph 6:12), specifically the "Prince of Persia", who is the same fallen angel that hindered the answer to Daniel's prayers (Dan 10:12). Principalities use personalities (people) to accomplish their purposes, so we are physically fighting the people who are under the influence or possessed by this spirit. Satan comes to lie, kill and destroy and his henchmen follow the same protocol. This is why negotiating with persons under the dominion of this spirit is futile. Like in World War II, defeating our enemy in detail to the point of unconditional surrender is the only viable goal. Whether it be Arafat, Abbas, Hamas, or Kim Jung il, we must not be fooled into believing that they are capable of entering into honest negotiations or will hold to any treaty. Islam celebrates Mohammed's victory over Qaresh which occurred by breaking a treaty in a sneak attack! Cease fires or hudnas with Fatah or Hamas are merely timeouts for the enemy to regroup and rearm. The goal of our enemy is victory or death. Detente` is not an option.

I agree with Edward that the clear vision required to successfully defeat the current campaign of this eternal foe will only come after national repentance and prayer. The fact of American Exceptionalism, ie that we have had one government for over 200 years (Russia has had 4 since 1918, Brazil 7 since 1822, France 15 since 1789,etc.) is due entirely to the grace of God and His providence intersecting with our thoughts. Repentance and prayer are our nations' traditional means of aligning ourselves with His purposes.

John Adams rightly observed, "It must be felt that there is no national security but n the nation's humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling providence."

Andrew said earlier in remarks, “War never solved anything! Except ending Facism, Nazism, Communism…
Germany never attacked us either in WWII.”

I second Andrew’s words and believe Ryan got it right in his commentary. Bravo!

Elliot and Edward, your religious ideology blinds you from making substantial, coherent arguments. Not everyone adheres to Christian beliefs and principles, and you need to remember that the many of the Muslims and Jews in the Middle East believe they are living righteous lives in the eys of G-d. Nationwide repentence won’t do anything to stop attacks or defuse our enemies.

Having spent considerable time working on the fringes of this world, I can say with authority that there is most definitely a link between al Qieda, 9/11 and Iraq. It is well established in intelligence circles that Iraq has been a main supporter of al Qieda and any other terrorist organization that could be used as a surrigate to attack the US or US interests abroad following Dessert Storm. The fact that their ideologies were different is irrelevant. It was a partnership of convenience for both Iraq and the terrorist. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend…for now, anyway). High level Iraqi intelligence officers met several times with the 9/11 terrorists prior to the attacks of 2001 and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing plotter had a direct linkage to Saddam’s intelligence apparatus. Even prior to the Gulf War Iraq routinely provided intelligence, training and logistical support to a wide variety of terrorist organizations as a means to attacks it’s potential enemies without leaving “fingerprints”. These are facts. it’s maddening to see them disregarded in the interests of self-serving domestic politics. Democrat or Republican makes no difference to these people. They want you dead. We’ve been at war since 1979 but it took 9/11 to wake us up to the reality.

War of Terror? It’s just a perspective.

Yes, when people attack us, they’re doing terror, as we think.

When we’ve been attacked, we fight back, in our sense, not an act of terror.

When we attack in the name of non-terror but hit the wrong people, they thought you’re doing them a terror, and they fight back.

And again, they return the fight, hitting other innocent target of us, making the innocent target feels that they have been terrorize.

And again, they fight back, hitting other innocents of theirs.

And this chain will never ends.

And you still think that war will solve issues?

Unless you give the 2 party the same weapons, the same equipment, the same army and isolate them a place for them to kill each other (Which is impossible), and not wrongly killed others, then I will say war is the way.

Or is it we’re doing war just to eliminate others so that we remain the strongest and ‘to protect our interest’ ?

Oh in that sense, just live with it as long as it is not u or me to be the victim, right? Yeah, and yet we think we’ll go to heaven…

I dont recall Saddam being involved in 911. So how does war with Iraq as an answer to 911 make any sence? Micheal Im sure you theories are interesting but they continue to be as baseless as the theories GW had about WMD with out evidence, If you have hard undeniable evidence please let us have it.

Because of that ILLEGAL war now almost 3000 more Americans are dead and Osama is still running around free. Ohh lets not forget the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis that would still be here is if it were not for answer you are sugesting is best to solve all conflicts.

Shux and Aviel I agree with you 100%

Religious Zelots of all denominations have caused more death and suffering though out history than any other cause. The funny things is that ussualy the religious argument is just a smoke screen for a power play or political end. Religion and politics don’t mix.

Mike comunism was not ended by any war, and all the wars that were fought trying to accomplish that were failures (Korea, Vietnam, etc)
Facism ended in Germany when the Belin wall came down not when Hitler was deposed.

Political solutions and the empowerment of people have ended those horrible methods of government, so dont fool yourself. Oh and please dont Compare Nazi Germany to Iraq thats just ridiculous.
